Three Secrets for Dealing with Clutter

My client Kathy runs a very successful business that requires a lot of her time, so over the past few years she has not been able to keep up with the clutter at her home. Things just kept accumulating and it became quite an issue.  Clutter is a problem that to some extend all of us have to deal with these days!  Everyone has some amount of it, and while many learn to manage, for some it becomes a huge obstacle. This article was inspired to help Kathy and many others who are ready to do a round of decluttering.

My personal experience of moving frequently in my younger years, changing cities and countries, had taught me how to leave things behind.  But after settling down in my current home of 17 years, random stuff inevitably started piling up. It took some years of observing myself and others to fully understand the effects of clutter on our well being. I am not a clutter consultant but seeing so much of its negative impact in my feng shui practice has taught me a great deal about it and how to deal with it.

During our session, my clients get the necessary insights, a plan, and the motivation and energy to start decluttering.  After clearing out a few areas, energy starts to flow and it becomes easier to continue the process.  Once the space is reclaimed, we conclude by implementing feng shui recommendations to complete the transformation!  But sometimes more help is needed, so for some it is a good idea to work with personal organizer until things are under control.

My most significant personal experience with clutter happened during my last major remodeling round when everything had to be moved out of the second floor.  I’ve always thought of myself as a person who keeps clutter to a minimum so I was surprised by how much stuff had accumulated in my closets over the years.  There were things that I didn’t even know I still had because they were behind other things!  Among them were art purchases that didn’t work out, tons of my own photos and framing experiments, accessories that had since been replaced, lamps, pillows, and some random little things that had lost their meaning.  It was pretty obvious that I don’t need most of this, and I realized that this had actually been weighing on my subconscious for some time. There was a feeling of tension, irritation, disharmony, heaviness and even guilt that I could now attribute to the clutter.  So three quarters of this stuff never made its way back upstairs!

I have to admit that it wasn’t too easy getting rid of all of this, but I was ruthless and kept going.  Let me tell you, it felt really good at the end!  Actually, it felt incredible!  I loved the feeling of spaciousness in my closets and rearranged them in a way that made it possible to see everything.  I felt light, joyful and even younger.  And I felt in control because I knew what I had and where to find it.  Since then, I’ve developed the habit of going through my closets and drawers two or three times a year.  Now, I even crave the feeling of lightness that I get after a good round of decluttering and it doesn’t take much time at all.

Here are three guidelines that I’ve created for myself over the years. I hope they would be useful for you too:

Things in your home influence you.  Ask yourself how you want to feel and surround yourself with things that reflect and represent that.  Most of us want love, inspiration, joy, relaxation, prosperity, creativity, clarity, organization, harmony… you got the idea.  Let’s call it a certain sense of well being.  Whatever doesn’t represent that is clutter!

We change.  Our tastes develop and our goals shift as time goes by.  Look at your furniture, accessories and clothing and ask yourself: “Is this me or not me?  Does it reflect who I am today or who I want to be tomorrow?” Whatever doesn’t, is clutter!

Your home and the things in it are an extension of you.  So honor yourself by surrounding yourself with things you deserve, want and and love.  Everything else is clutter!

My work is based on the very simple principle that we are intimately connected with our environment and all the things in it, emotionally and energetically.  So we can shape how we feel by surrounding ourselves with things that represent how we want to feel.

Annual Feng Shui Flying Stars and predictions for 2017, Year of the Fire Rooster

Annual Feng Shui Flying Stars and predictions for 2017, Year of the Fire Rooster

The Rooster is flamboyant, energetic and intelligent. It can be self-centered, confident and volatile. The elemental composition of the year is Yin Fire (Heavenly Stem) on top of Yin Metal (Earthy Branch). This represents an elemental clash (Fire destroys Metal), suggesting tension, stress and conflict. In this regard, 2017 is similar to 2016, the year of the Fire Monkey and my predictions for last year proved to be pretty accurate. The difference is that this year’s forces are Yin while last year’s forces were Yang which are more open, enthusiastic and straight forward. Yin forces have a tendency to accumulate and then erupt under the right circumstances. So this year can be more eruptive and violent than last year.  More political tensions, international conflicts, terrorist attacks, explosions and fire disasters can be expected.

There is always a positive side as well. The Fire element brings hope, warmth and excitement. Nobody can expect stability under two clashing elements, but investors are more enthusiastic in Fire years so stock markets tend to do better. Last year was a good example of this volatility and growth. But beware with your investments towards the end of the year! As the Fire element diminishes its influence in the fall market downturns can be expected.

I am not posting this info just for entertainment. If we meet difficulties with awareness and caution, the outcome can be much better. The best way to deal with tension in political and economic arenas is to match it with maturity, wisdom and calmness. One side of the Fire element is aggression and violence but the other side is warmth and love. So let us channel the Fire element of the year to bring care and kindness to our families and communities in these challenging times!

In traditional Chinese medicine, Fire is associated with the heart and blood circulation.  Metal is related to lungs, skin and the immune system. People with weaknesses in these areas should pay more attention to their health, eat well, exercise, de-stress and take additional supplements to strengthen the heart and immune system. This is especially important for people with weak Fire and weak Metal elements. The sickness influence (Flying Stars#2 and #5) are occupying NW and S this year so if your front door or bedroom are in these areas you should put more effort into your health.

People born in the year of the Rooster or Rabbit may have a difficult year and may benefit from carrying a protective talisman this year.  However, predictions based only on the year of birth are not very reliable. It is always advisable to do a full Four Pillars of destiny chart to understand how to benefit from the energy of the year.

Flying Stars change their position on February 4th so it is advised to review your house’s chart before this date to harness the new year’s luck and make sure you are not positioned for unexpected difficulties.

If you had your cures placed for 2016, remove them just a few days before February 4th. If they worked well for you then it’s likely that they absorbed some negative energy and should be discarded or recharged to remain effective. You can place new cures any time on or after February 4th.

Flying Stars 2017

Afflictions Stars

5-Yellow, the most malevolent Star is in the south this year. It is associated with financial loss, illness, accidents and obstacles.

It is an Earth Star, therefore the effects are neutralized with a strong Metal element. The best way to neutralize this influence is to hang a large to medium sized six-rod wind chime outside on the southern side of your property.

If south is your house’s facing direction, or, if your front door, kitchen or back door are in the south, you may need some additional cures or elemental balancing. If your bedroom is in the south and you have some health issues, it is advised to move into an alternate bedroom if at all possible. If your front door is in the south and you have an alternate door, use that door more often.

Additional remedies include the Five Element Pagoda, Six Coins, Wu Lou, metal clocks, metal vases or other metal décor. You don’t need all of them.  Depending how vulnerable your situation is, choose one or two that resonate with you most.

Remove Earth or Fire elements from the south sector of your house or office because these elements will strengthen the 5-Yellow Star. The Wood element is very good there. It is advised to keep the area quiet avoid any remodeling or construction that might disturb the energy.

2-Illness Star will occupy the northwestern sector of a building this year.

It is a Black Earth Star and Metal is used to absorb and neutralize this influence. Traditional remedies include the Wu Lou, Six Coins or a medicine Buddha. You may use any metal statue of a deity of your spiritual tradition. Talismans work best if it’s something that you have a personal connection to. Avoid using Fire and Earth elements in the area as they will strengthen this Star. It is advised to keep the area avoid remodeling or construction.  If your bedroom is in the NW and you have some health issues, it is advised to move into an alternate bedroom if possible. The NW relates to the father of the family so men or breadwinners are more affected.

3-Argumentative Star flies to the west.

It is a Green Wood Star and can bring arguments, misunderstandings and legal problems. Fire element is used to neutralize this influence. Since west is a Metal Bagua, sector you need to avoid introducing excessive Fire there which can bring disharmony. My advice is to use Fire in moderation in the west. A piece of red paper, a red envelope or a red candle will do.

7-Violent Star moves to the southwest. This Star brings tension, stress, and even robbery. It is a Metal Star so the Water element will diminish its influence. If it falls on your front or back door you may consider using a remedy. If falls into your bedroom you can expect more arguments. Women will be affected more than men. One of the traditional cures is a pair of rhinoceroses as they are considered to be water animals and protectors.

Auspicious Stars

8-Auspicious Wealth Star resides in the east. This Star brings wealth, opportunities, success, and happiness. It is especially lucky if east of your building’s facing direction or your front or even back door is in the east. This star will activate opportunities and luck. If you want to strengthen your luck further, add crystals and bright lights to the area. If it is the location of your living room or dining room, spend more time there and having gatherings will activate the energy even more. The best enhancer for this auspicious influence is the Water element. If you want to make a big change, I advise placing a water feature in the East.

9-Future Prosperity Star
flies to the southeast. This star relates to fame, future prosperity and joy. It is a Fire Star. If you want to enhance it you can place a healthy plant or a Nine Coins on a red string and add some reds and bright lights. Using the area also helps to activate this positive influence.

1-Lucky White Star will be residing in the center. This Star relates to career, business success and promotion. It is a Wealth Water Star and the energy of the center relates to the Earth element so in most cases you don’t need to do anything.

6-Favorable Heaven Star moves into the north. This star brings luck and good fortune, especially of a speculative kind. If your front or back door is in the north you will benefit from this influence. Activate it with Six Coins, crystals or metal decor.

4-Romance and Scholastic Star is in the northeast. This star brings new romantic opportunities and luck to those pursuing studies. It can bring networking opportunities and wealth. It is a Wood Star so placing a plant or a special symbol that reflects your pursuits will help activate those aspects.

Additional Annual Afflictions (Shar Chi) and Renovation Rules

Three Killings is in the east (45°-135°).

It is not recommended to sit with your back to the East. Three celestial guardians are used to suppress this affliction.

Grand Duke Jupiter (Tai Sui) is in the west (262.5°-278.5°).

Display a Tai Sui talisman in the room that is affected or carry it with you if you are born in the year of the Rooster, Rabbit, Rat or Horse. It is not recommended to sit facing West this year.

Both afflictions can bring legal problems, accidents and potential injuries so they are not to be taken lightly, especially if your front door, office or bedroom are in those sectors. It is advised to avoid renovation or substantial construction in these areas.

Transform Your Home into a Sanctuary with Feng Shui

IMG_1433-2

A few weeks ago, on a flight back from vacation, I had a sudden feeling of joy as a thought about home crossed my mind. The thought was followed by an image of my family room, but it looked a bit different than it does in person. The room was filled with a shimmering golden light and felt alive. I then saw other parts of the house filled with a similar light, and there was a feeling of warmth and quiet joy. It was as if the house was speaking to me, like a person who missed me, and I missed it too.

Creating this kind of connection to the home is what I’ve been helping my clients with for over a decade, and I am going to share what I have learned along the way in this workshop. Please mark your calendar for April 9th, 2-4pm, for Feng Shui Room by Room: Transforming your Home into a Sanctuary.

Eight tips for how to infuse your home with warmth and nourishment

Ask yourself this simple question: “How do I feel when I enter my home?” Everyone has a different relationship with their home, but most of us need and want a supportive environment where we can relax, rejuvenate and thrive.

Although eventually you will want to infuse your entire home with beautiful energy, it is a good idea to start small. Begin with one room or even one corner and work on it until it feels just right.

Here are a few tips for different spaces.  IMG_1420

  1.       Before you begin creating your sanctuary, clear the clutter! Get rid of things you don’t love and things that don’t represent who you are anymore.
  2.       Use natural plants to soften the space and bring life into your home. Plants also improve air quality and even absorb electromagnetic radiation.
  3.       Place quartz and other gemstones to infuse a space with natural beauty and warm earth energy. Choose your stones carefully, but don’t overthink it.   Use your feelings and find a stone that you are drawn to.
  4.       Bring a feeling of relaxation with water.  Try pictures, sea shells and sea stones, or a fountain.
  5.       Create an area of a strong emotional response by grouping a few special and meaningful items together.
  6.       Add a few red and yellow items to the kitchen to bring joy and happiness while cooking meals and socializing.
  7.       Place a light colored rug or a sheepskin in the bedroom and use softer decor to enhance the feeling of sensuality.
  8.       Spray essential oils dissolved in water to clear energy and create a new vibe. Some favorites are grapefruit and lemongrass for the kitchen and roses for the bedroom.

The most important tip is this one: if you only have things that you love in your home, it will unavoidably love you back!

Happy Spring!

Annual Feng Shui Flying Stars and Predictions for 2016, Year of the Fire Monkey

2016-Year-of-the-Monkey

Bumpy rides inpolitical and economics arenas will continue as we enter the year of the Fire Monkey on February 8th. The elemental composition of the year, Yang Fire (Heavenly Stem) sitting on Yang Metal (Earthy Branch, Monkey) represents tension. In Five Elements cycle Fire destroys Metal so ups and downs are expected throughout the year. However the Fire element of the year will bring

more enthusiasm and hope. Stock markets generally do better in Fire years as investors ride on a sense of optimism, but no stability is granted this year!
There will be plenty of political tension but the nature of it will be different as Fire is more open and enthusiastic in comparing with Wood elements’ violent and destructive influence in the previous two years. There is a lot of force in Fire element, but hopefully more chances for diplomacy and positive outcomes than in Wood years.

The Monkey is intelligent, exciting and sharp. We can expect that technology and science will thrive this year. There might be some breakthroughs and new inventions on the way! I personally will be watching with a great anticipation for more results from a Large Hadron Collider. It is quite possible that a mysterious collision that was seen in December that doesn’t fit the Standard Model might be a beginning of new physics and a new way we will see the world.

The Monkey is also fast, witty and vigilant. There will be a sense of speedy events and changes throughout the year. Chinese Masters say that to do well in a year of the Monkey you will need to outsmart the Monkey, therefore think twice before making any important decisions especially financial and business decisions.

Health alert for everyone. More sickness is anticipated this year as the annual Flying Star 2, which is a sickness Star, will be relocating to the center of a building. This year taking care of your health by adding more exercise and a healthier diet plus taking time to release stress will pay off a big way! Preventative measures are always preferable.

Flying Stars change their position on February 4th so it is advisable to review your house chart to harness the luck of the new year and make sure you are not positioned for unexpected difficulties.

If you had your remedies placed for 2015, remove them just a few days before February 4th. If they worked well for you then it’s likely that they absorbed some negative energy and should be discarded or recharged to remain effective. You can place new remedies any time on or after February 4th.

2016 Flying Stars

Afflictions Stars

T306MB

5-Yellow is in the northeast this year. It associates with financial loss, illness, accidents and obstacles.
The effects are neutralized with a strong Metal element. I recommend placing a six-rod wind chime outside on the NE side of your property. If NE is your house’s facing direction, or, if your front door, bedroom or kitchen, back door are in the NE, you may need some additional remedies or considerations. If your bedroom is in the NE and you have some health issues, it is advised to move into an alternative bedroom if at all possible. It affects the youngest son of the family especially if his bedroom is in the NE.

Additional remedies include Five Element Pagoda, Kalachakra Stupa, Six Coins, Wu Lou, metal clocks, metal vases or other metal décor. You don’t need all of them but depending how vulnerable your situation is choose one or two that resonate with you the most. Make sure there are no Earth or Fire elements present in the NE sector as they will strengthen this malevolent Star. Water element is good in the NE this year. Wood element is fine too, but in moderation.  It is advised to keep the area quiet and do not do any remodeling or construction to disturb the energy.

SL15069-3wulou2-Illness Star will occupy the center of a building this year. It is a tricky situation because the center of a building relates to health. In many cases it is not so easy to remedy because it is often an open area.
Metal element is used to absorb and neutralize this energy. Remedies include Wu Lou, Six Coins or a medicine Buddha. Avoid using Fire and Earth elements in the area as they will strengthen this Star. It is advised to keep the area quiet and do not do any remodeling or construction to disturb the energy. If it is not possible to place a remedy in the center of your house or business and you already have health problems, I advise to get a personal protective talisman and carry it with you.

il_214x170.900189179_aodi3-Argumentative Star flies to the northwest. This Star brings arguments, misunderstandings and legal problems. Typically we use Fire element to drain this influence as the nature of this Star is Wood. The problem is that NW is a Bagua sector where it is important to have a strong Metal element. Too much Fire in that area will destroy Metal. NW relates to a father of the family so having a clash of elements there might represent difficulties for a bread winner. My advice is to use Fire but in moderation in that area. A piece of red paper, red envelope or red candle will do. Also, a good remedy will be six coins on a red string. In addition, a statue of Buddha, angel, or your spiritual symbol or protector will be great to have in the NW.

SL12017-3rhino

7-Violent Star moves to the north. This Star brings tension, stress, and even robbery. It is a Metal Star so the Water element of the north will diminish its influence. In most cases you don’t need to do anything. If it falls on your front or back door you may consider remedying it. If falls into your bedroom you can expect more arguments. If you don’t already have Water element in your house’s north direction, then it is a good time to add it. One of the traditional cures is a pair of rhinoceroses as they are considered to be water animals and protectors.

Auspisious Stars

water_fountain58-Wealth Star resides in the southwest. This Star brings wealth, opportunities, success, and happiness. It is especially lucky if SW is your building’s facing direction or location of your front door or even your back door. It will activate opportunities and luck. If you want to strengthen your luck further, place Eight Coins on a red string, add crystals and bright lights to the area. If it is your living room or dining room spend more time there, have parties as it will help to activate energy even more. The best enhancer for the SW is Water element. If you want to make a big change, I advise placing a water feature in the SW.

14ZZPLANT9-Future Prosperity Star flies to the east. This star relates to fame and future prosperity. It will also strengthen the luck of the oldest son. In most cases you don’t need to do anything as the Wood element of the East will be nourishing this beneficial influence. If you want further enhancement you can place a healthy plant or Nine Coins on a red string and add some reds and bright lights.

shopping1-Lucky White Star will be visiting the southeast. This Star relates to career and business success and promotion. It is a Wealth Water Star and it is in harmony with the Wood element of the SE. Using Water along with being active in the area will strengthen your chances for success. Additionally you can add  crystals. Chrystal chandelier is great in the SE. If your SE area has a lot of Wood, Fire and Earth elements make sure to add more Water element so Water is not drained. Metal element is OK in the SE this year but in a small quantity.

SL11164-3sixemperorcoins6-Favorable Heaven Star moves into the south. This star brings luck and good fortune, especially of a speculative kind. It’s great if your front or back door is in the south, as well as office or bedrooms. Activate it with Six Coins, crystals, 6 rods wind chimes and spend more time in the area.

hearts4-Romance and Scholastic Star is in the west. This star brings romantic opportunities and luck to those pursuing studies. It can bring networking opportunities and wealth. If it falls into your youngest daughter’s room, the romance or marriage will be hard to avoid! Placing a plant or a special symbol that reflects your pursuits will help to activate those aspects.

Additional Annual Afflictions (Shar Chi) and Renovation Rules

16-PC-01-3taisuitalismanGrand Duke Jupiter (Tai Sui) is in the southwest (232.5°-247.5°).
Display a Tai Sui talisman in the room that is affected or carry it with you if you are born in the year of the Monkey, Tiger, Snake and Pig. It is not recommended to sit facing SW this year.

3chilinThree Killings is in the south (135°-225°).
It is not recommended to sit with your back to the south. Three celestial guardians are used to suppress this affliction.

Both afflictions can bring legal problems, accidents and potential injuries so they are not to be taken lightly, especially if your front door, office or bedroom are in those sectors. It is advised to avoid renovation or substantial construction in these areas.
